HEXTOR GUNDOGS GENERAL TRAINING PAGE

Very soon the pup has grown significantly and is showing a great desire to work for the handler.

We often get asked ' What age should I start training my Gundog ?' ....The answer is, ' As soon as possible '. We begin training our own dogs as soon as we get them home as new puppies. We begin with very basic things for only a few minutes at a time. We cover things such as basic obedience, recall, introduction to retrieving and use of the whistle..... and most importantly, we make it fun. New puppies are introduced under supervision to our older dogs and we gradually increase the amount of things we do whilst keeping a close watch on how the pup is behaving ..... After all, every dog is different and not all are as keen or bold as the pup pictured here. Once injections have fully taken effect, the pup can then be taken into public and allowed to mix and meet with other dogs, again, under supervision.
Having begun to instill the basics around the home, it makes subsequent training in the outside world a lot less stressful as the pup already knows that focusing on the handler results in fun and enjoyment, provided of course that the correct methods have been used in the first place.
Another question we are often asked is ' How long will it take to train my Gundog ?' ...and the answer to that is ' It depends '. It depends on the individual dog, it's breeding and background and most importantly, how much time and effort you are willing to spend on your dog. Dogs learn by repetition and through the application of consistent training methods coupled with clear commands. Some learn quickly, others less so
As a general rule, the more work you put in, the more you get out. However, if you don't have the time or skills necessary to train your dog, then it might be worthwhile placing him with an experienced trainer for residential training.
The finished article pictured left is the dog also pictured in the three images above. A fully trained HPR ( in this instance a German Shorthaired Pointer ) holding staunch point on Partridge.
This particular dog was a joy to train from the outset. He loves to work and learn and is every bit as enthusiastic when working Game as he is in general training with dummies
